The Spaying & Neutering Programme has been ongoing for many years. A policy shared by many shelters and animal associations worldwide. APAA’s president has just received another call for help from a woman who has a small property, now overrun with cats. “She started feeling sorry for them and a small private colony got started. Now out of control.” Where a small pretty kitty and her little play-mates turn up there are now roughly 9 or 10 and others turning up. “Or being dumped.” The next-door neighbour has taken a dislike to cats and has decided to dump all the strays onto her small, once private cat-colony. “The problem is, mixing true feral cats with domesticated felines. Doesn’t always work.” Territorial animals. Ah! “The lady has offered to help sort the problem out with a donation.” Good. “A hard lesson that history does repeat itself. Again and again. There is no way feral felines can stop breeding, on their own, voluntarily.” Guess not.

“If you are fond of cats, and want to keep them safe and secure, SNiP them as soon as you can.” Right! “The season for abandoned dogs looms ahead. They are usually female, pregnant and vulnerable. Probably abused. Keep an eye out for the stray by a bin or on the side of a busy road. They get dumped with frequent repetition. They need urgent care and attention. Probably on the road for days without food.” Again. Is history repeating itself? Got it. “Our van is used for everything! Of course, we scrub it down in between venues and Pop-Up’s.” Hm.
