A government panel has largely supported Japan’s new energy policy, targeting renewable energy at 40 to 50 percent by 2040 while increasing nuclear power to 20 percent of the energy mix.

By 2030, this initiative aims to achieve a target of 20 to 22 percent for nuclear energy, 36 to 38 percent for renewables, and 41 percent for fossil fuel in terms of the energy supply.
The plan, which revises the 2021 policy, seeks to meet growing power demands and decarbonisation goals, with Cabinet approval expected by March.
