The park is the result of more than a year of work, during which invasive species were eradicated and 2,440 shrubs and more than 400 trees were planted, most of them native, such as oaks, cork oaks, alders, ash trees and laurels.
The operation, which involved an investment of around 240 thousand euros from Metro Mondego, also led to the recovery of the river, with the stabilisation of the slopes and planting in the spaces next to the watercourse.
According to architect Laura Roldão, the project followed the language of the landscape already present in Vale das Flores, creating a wide and attractive area that seeks to “bring nature into the city” and restore the waterline.
Present at the inauguration, the president of Metro Mondego, João Marrana, said that the company, which will ensure the operation of the Mondego Mobility System (SMM), is on the right track to meet the target of three trees planted for every tree cut down in the scope of the project for this new transport service.
The mayor of Coimbra, José Manuel Silva, stated that almost two hectares of land were worked on along the Vale das Flores River, making the space “visitable and enjoyable”.
Speaking to journalists, the mayor also highlighted that “the city will take a leap forward” with the SMM.
In this project, the intervention on a slope remains to be completed, the stability of which will be monitored by Coimbra City Council.
Once this assessment is complete, trees and shrubs should be planted on this slope.
