Storages by river basin were higher than the January averages (1990/91 to 2023/24), except in the Mira, Ribeiras do Algarve and Arade basins, which, however, had an increase in retained water.

In the Barlavento Algarve river basin, the amount of water rose from 12.6% in December to 15.4% in January. This basin continues to be the one with the smallest amount of water reserves.

Of the 60 monitored reservoirs, 33 have water availability greater than 80% of the total volume and eight less than 40%.

According to SNIRH data available today, the Barlavento (15.4%), Arade (37.5%), Mira (39.4%) and Sado (58%) basins had less water at the end of January.

The Ave and Tejo basins were those with the highest volume of water, with 98% and 89.6%, respectively, followed by the Douro (84.4%), Cávado (83%), Lima (81.9%), Guadiana (81.7%) Mondego (79.9%) and West (74.5%).

Each hydrographic basin may correspond to more than one reservoir.

Last week, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) indicated that the Algarve's dams are at 49% of their total water storage capacity, after the rains of the last few days, which ensures the water supply for more than one year.

Data sent to Lusa by the Portuguese Environment Agency also shows that, at a national level, the total storage capacity in the 80 reservoirs is at 77%.
