The decree-law, presented by the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party (PS), had been unanimously approved in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic on 17 January.

The proposal to elevate Boliqueime to the status of town was presented in September 2024 by the socialist deputies elected by the Faro constituency, Jamila Madeira, Luís Graça and Jorge Botelho, joined by fellow socialist deputy Pedro Delgado Alves.

The document was approved conclusively, with favourable votes from deputies from all benches, in the plenary session on October 4th of last year.

The final text was analysed and approved in detail by the Local Power and Territorial Cohesion Commission, the body that confirmed the legal requirements for elevating Boliqueime to the category of town.

To be elevated to a town, a locality must have more than 3,000 voters in a continuous population cluster and at least half of the following establishments: medical post, pharmacy, town hall, fishermen's house, entertainment centre, cultural centre or other groups, bank branch, public transport, post office, commercial or hotel establishments and a public school.

Located between the cities of Loulé and Albufeira, Boliqueime is a parish in the municipality of Loulé, with an area of 46.21 square kilometres and an estimated population of around 6,000 inhabitants.
