Located in Loures and "with an area of approximately 54 thousand square meters – equivalent to five football fields – and storage capacity for almost 44 thousand pallets, the new logistics center was designed to strengthen the supply of Lidl stores in the central region of the country, ensuring greater efficiency and quality in the distribution chain", the retailer said in a statement.
The construction "involved more than 300 companies and around 1,000 workers", says Lidl.
"The project also included a wide range of urban development works, namely structural roads and access to residential areas and future industry, with an investment of five million euros allocated to changes in public spaces", reads the statement.
Lidl's new logistics center in Loures has the capacity to supply 100 stores, 66 parking spaces for trucks, 257 for light vehicles and 18 spaces with the capacity to charge electric cars.
Lidl celebrates its 30th anniversary in the Portuguese market this year, having invested "around 2 billion euros in the country" since 1995.
"We are celebrating an important investment in Loures, of 115 million euros, which reaffirms our commitment and dedication to the country where we have been present" for three decades, says the executive president (CEO) of Lidl Portugal, Hélder Rocha, quoted in a statement.
This new logistics center "also reflects the investment in a region of utmost importance for our strategic vision of future growth, increasing our logistics capacity, bringing greater comfort and efficiency to the employees who work there and improving our service provided to the community", concludes the CEO.
In turn, the mayor of Loures, Ricardo Leão, says that this opening "confirms" the "attractiveness" of the municipality "to those who want to invest in a territory whose positioning will guarantee privileged access to the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and the country".
Lidl Portugal has a network of over 280 stores from north to south of the country and four logistics centers – Santo Tirso (North), Torres Novas (West), Loures (Center) and Palmela (South) - and employs around 9,000 employees.
"The oldest of the logistics centers, in Sintra, will now be replaced by the new logistics center in Loures", and "with this move, Sintra becomes the operational support center for Lidl Portugal", says the company.
