Operation “Moto I”, which begins today and ends on Sunday, aims to contribute to the reduction of road accidents, ensure the fluidity of traffic and support all road users, explains the GNR in a statement.

The GNR will pay special attention to patrolling and monitoring access roads to the Algarve due to the 2nd round of the Superbike World Championship, which will take place between Friday and Sunday, at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão, in the district of Faro, with a significant increase in traffic expected.

During 2024, there were 7,739 road accidents involving motorized two-wheeled vehicles, resulting in 118 fatalities (around 30% of the general total), 693 serious injuries (around 36% of the general total) and 5,530 minor injuries (around 21% of the general total).

In the note, the guard recalls that “drivers of two-wheeled motor vehicles can be considered a risk group, given that the consequences of accidents are normally more serious, taking into account the lower capacity for protection in the event of a collision or skid”.
