Mafra is focusing on housing rehabilitation to increase the supply of homes by almost two hundred, with the majority being under construction, revealed mayor, Hugo Luís.

"We have 17 applications for 279 social housing units approved by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), of which 99 are rehabilitation, corresponding to RRP funding of 41.6 million euros for a total investment of 42.2 million euros," he said, quoted by Lusa.

According to the mayor, the city council approved the awarding of a contract, worth 4.6 million euros, for the construction of 24 social housing units on Rua de São Domingos and Rua da Bela Vista, in Encarnação. Hugo Luís said that the project is scheduled to begin in April, with a completion period of 13 months.

Next month, the local authority will also begin construction work on 52 housing units on Rua do Mato da Cruz, in Ericeira, a contract which was approved by the municipal executive two weeks ago for 7.4 million euros. The project, which has a 14-month completion period, was put out to tender in October for 8.8 million euros.

In 2024, Mafra City Council revised its Local Housing Strategy and increased investment to 61.7 million euros to address rising property prices. The plan aims to support 390 families by creating an equal number of social housing units.

According to the document, the municipality's Social Action services recorded 285 requests for housing eligible for access to support from the national 1º Direito programme.

Of the 285 families, 167 live in precarious conditions, 80 live in unsanitary and unsafe housing, 19 in inadequate housing and another 19 in overcrowded housing.
