Algarve-born visual artist Nuno Viegas returns to the United States with his solo exhibition STORYBOOK, opening on 5 April at the prestigious Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles, where it will be on view until 26 April.

In this new body of work, Viegas reflects on the intersection between past and future, rebellion and responsibility, anonymity and legacy. His personal journey from adolescent graffiti to fatherhood serves as a starting point for a broader exploration of the values that shape our identity and what we choose to pass on to future generations.

“Graffiti was one of the biggest influences in my life, teaching me about brotherhood, freedom and experiences lived for the sheer joy of the moment,” says Viegas. “In a world driven by money and power, graffiti reminds us that true happiness lies in the memories and bonds we create along the way.”

While graffiti is a central element in the exhibition, Viegas asserts that “this is not graffiti” – just as Magritte’s pipe was not a pipe. In STORYBOOK, he deconstructs and reinterprets graffiti elements, removing them from their urban context and translating them into a minimalist, hyperrealistic aesthetic. His iconic Shirt Mask figures represent a space where origin, status or personal identity are irrelevant – what endures are the stories and human connections we forge.

About the artist

Born in Faro and raised in Quarteira, Nuno Viegas began his journey into graffiti in 2001, founding the Policromia Crew. After completing a degree in Visual Arts at the University of the Algarve, he moved to Rotterdam, where he apprenticed under Dutch artist Tymon DeLaat and developed the distinctive artistic identity for which he is now known. With a career marked by exhibitions and urban art festivals across multiple countries, Viegas has established himself as one of the most recognised names in the new wave of contemporary urban art.

Thinkspace Gallery, renowned for championing both emerging and established talents in the contemporary art scene, hosts this exhibition as part of its ongoing mission to spotlight innovative voices. The artist will be present at the opening.
