Though familiar with the fruit since childhood, it wasn’t until later in life that I truly discovered its extraordinary potential. What started as curiosity soon became a mission to showcase the power and versatility of the prickly pear.
The prickly pear grows on the Opuntia ficus-indica cactus, a resilient plant native to Mexico and Central America. Far from being just another desert dweller, this cactus is nature’s eco-warrior. It thrives in hot, arid environments, requires little water, minimal maintenance, and rarely needs chemicals - making it one of the most sustainable crops suited to Portugal’s Mediterranean climate.
What excites me most is the plant’s versatility. The vibrant, sweet fruit can be enjoyed fresh or transformed into juices, jams, desserts, liqueurs - even gin. Its young pads, known as nopalitos, are delicious in savoury dishes and rich in health benefits. And the innovation doesn’t stop at the kitchen: prickly pear extracts are increasingly used in cosmetics, traditional remedies, and even sustainable materials for construction and design.
Nutritionally, this humble fruit is a powerhouse. It’s loaded with fibre, Vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and potent antioxidants like betalains and flavonoids. In Portugal, it goes by many names - figueira-da-índia, palma, piteira, or nopal - but no matter what you call it, the message is clear: this plant is a natural ally in the quest for healthier living and a greener planet.
At PCACTUS, our goal is not just to grow a crop, but to cultivate awareness. We believe the future of farming lies in innovation, sustainability, and embracing what nature offers in abundance.
If you haven’t yet discovered the prickly pear, now is the perfect time. The future may be spiky - and delicious. Pedro Canhestro, CEO of PCACTUS
