"This is the seventh of 11 awareness and inspection campaigns scheduled for this year as part of the National Inspection Plan (PNF). The initiative is being carried out in partnership by the Public Security Police (PSP), the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), and the National Republican Guard (GNR). This year’s road safety campaign will run until next Monday."

"In a statement, the authorities said the campaign aims to raise awareness among motorcyclists about the importance of safe driving, adherence to the Highway Code, and the avoidance of risky behaviours such as driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, and improper use of safety equipment."

The campaign includes awareness-raising actions by the ANSR throughout the country, as well as inspection operations by the PSP and GNR, especially on roads and access points with high traffic flow.

The authorities warn that motorcycle and moped users, when involved in road accidents, have a higher risk of suffering serious consequences than people traveling in other vehicles.

“This risk is due to their vulnerability due to the lack of passenger compartment protection”, the statement reads.

The use of an approved helmet “properly tightened and adjusted reduces the risk of death in the event of an accident by 40%”, they add.

The use of other protective equipment is also recommended, namely gloves, boots, jackets with protectors, trousers with CE protection and airbags, as they “help to reduce the severity of the consequences in the event of an accident”.

“Road accidents do not constitute fatalities, and their most serious consequences can be avoided by adopting safe behavior on the road”, they stress.
