According to data from the National Neonatal Screening Programme (PNRN), coordinated by the National Institute of Health, Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA), in 2024, a total of 84,631 babies were observed in Portugal, 1,133 fewer babies than the previous year (85,764).
Data provided to Lusa indicates that January was the month in which the largest number of newborns were tracked (7,670), followed by March (6,741) and February (6,371).
In this first quarter, Lisbon was the district with the most exams carried out (6,430), followed by Porto (3,567), Setúbal (1,640), Braga (1,522), Faro (1,119) and Aveiro (989).
The lowest number of tests was observed in the district of Bragança (124), followed by Portalegre (143) and Guarda (164).
