Perched majestically at the highest point of Parque Eduardo VII, the Monumento ao 25 de Abril is a materialised celebration of democracy and freedom. Inaugurated in 1997 to mark the anniversary of the 1974 Carnation Revolution. It stands as a powerful tribute to the courageous military captains who peacefully overthrew decades of dictatorship.
The monument itself is a fascinating, abstract composition of raw, fragmented stone blocks. At its centre rises a large, phallic-shaped central pillar that symbolises the eruption of new life and energy, set within a wide, cascading water mirror where smaller, shattered stones are scattered. Facing this structure, a stylised limestone element evokes the shape of a blooming carnation, the definitive symbol of the revolution.
To stand at this viewpoint, beneath the massive, waving flag of Portugal, is to contemplate the enduring value of liberty while looking down over the vast valley of Lisbon. Especially with the Castle in the front view. It shows the various ways freedom was being protected. In old and modern times.
