The Super Cup – or Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira as it is known in Portugal - is match played each August between the winners of the previous season's league – the Primeira Liga – and main cup – Taça de Portugal – competitions.
The goals were scored by Rafa, in the 40th minute, Pizzi in the 60th and 75th, Grimaldo in the 64th, and Chiquinho in the 90th. Sporting ended the match with 10 men after Doumbia was sent off in the 89th minute.
The win was Benfica’s the biggest over their Lisbon rivals in 33 years and meant that the two clubs are now evenly matched in terms of the number of Super Cup wins.
It also evened up the records between the two sides in Super Cup games, with two wins for each – Benfica in 1980 and 2019 and Sporting in 1987 and 2015. But the other club in Portugal’s ‘Big Three’, FC Porto, is still way ahead with 21 trophies, more than all other winners together.
