The passport control will be lifted at 0:00 on Sunday 14 May.

The government decided to take this measure because of the “size, characteristics, complexity of the event, media visibility and the huge flow of people” who are expected in Fatima and the “current threat context”.

While the borders are reimposed, all citizens regardless of their nationality who enter or leave the country through airports, aerodromes, ports, marinas or by land have to have a valid travel document such as a passport od ID card.

Pope Francis is going to be in Fatima on Friday and Saturday to celebrate the centenary of the apparitions, forcing security measures to be beefed up.
