Speaking on the fifth-month anniversary of the tourist tax on domestic and foreign tourist stays in hotels or couch surfing in the Portuguese capital, the Town Hall said that “one solution may involve the government introducing specific laws”.
The municipal tourist tax was approved in 2014 and was expected to collect one euro a night up to a maximum of seven euros and one euro for every arrival by sea or air to the city.
Although the tax has been charged since the beginning of the year on accommodation, the same is not true for arrivals.
The Socialist majority chambers expect to collect €15.7 million with this tax in 2016, split about 50:50 between accommodation and arrivals.
