On the mainland over 100 fires are still active, the biggest of which is in Águeda, in northern Portugal. One person has died in a fire in Valongo.
In Madeira a massive fire near the capital Funchal is still active on three fronts and fire-fighters’ efforts there are being hampered by strong winds that have seen flights cancelled in recent days.
Some 20 people in Madeira have been left homeless after their homes perished and a health centre has been evacuated.
In the Algarve a large fire in Silves, which ignited at around 3pm yesterday, was still being brought under control earlier this morning.
A lot of thanks to the fire men and GNR who really did their work and saved my house and plants from the flames

The problem is being blamed on bad forestry management . There is a management problem in most Portuguese groups , government and civil service and stae controlled organisations , as there is a total lack of accountability in management , and much incompetence .
