The GNR is staging the campaign in the districts of Porto, Braga, Setubal and Faro to improve pedestrian safety and mobility.
According to the GNR, last year the number of collisions with pedestrians rose by 11 percent on 2017, resulting in 70 deaths and 202 serious injuries.
The vast majority of the victims were aged over 50.
I am just a senior visitor from Canada for 7 weeks, do not rent a car so I walk mostly, sometimes bus in the city. Drivers here more often than not do not want to stop at crosswalks for anyone, mothers with strollers, seniors or others. I thought a crosswalk suggested pedestrians have the right of way? I do not see police at significant intersections, mostly chatting at Jardim Manuel Bivar. Nice because I know where I can find one if I need one but not helpful to traffic policing in Faro maybe. Some of the white paint has faded so it is hard to tell if it is a crosswalk. I always for for locals to cross as I think they will know better than I do, but maybe not when I see the figures of traffic deaths! The bigger the car or more expensive seem to give them the right to the road. What is to hurry for here? I like the shop keepers and restaurant folks very much!!! They are very polite and helpful.
