The vote saw some heated arguments among deputies. The PAN document recommended that the city council makes clear to the bullring's landlord that 'bullfighting should be abolished from (…) the premises', and called for Lisbon to declare itself a “city free of shows involving animal suffering.”

Lisbon mayor, Fernando Medina, said that there is “no direct or indirect funding for the staging of bullfights” in the capital.
