The 102nd Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, otherwise known as the Portuguese Feast, is held every year in New Bedford and is the largest Portuguese gathering in the United States.
Around 250,000 people are expected to visit the event between today and Sunday. First held in 1915 after being put together by a group of Madeiran emigrants, revenue from the event is used to fund scholarships.
Well done! Parabens to the Portuguese-Madeiran community of New Bedford for maintaining a practice for over a hundred years! You are an inspiration to the descendants of Madeirense who came to the Hawaiian Islands at the end of the 19th century [1878] and the beginning of the 20th century [till 1913]. Thank you, media, for letting the world know about the festival.
