“The two PSP officers who usually issue notifications saw an individual in the street for whom they suspected there was an arrest warrant,” said commissioner Maria do Céu of Setúbal PSP. “When they approached him to seek identification, with no warning, the individual attacked an officer with an axe and a knife.”
Following this attack, “the PSP officer was obliged to shoot in legitimate defence,” said Céu, who was speaking from the scene of the incident.
The shooting was reported to the district command at 10.44am.
The man died on the spot and the officer he had attacked was taken with serious injuries to Barreiro hospital.
