According to the ranking of European health systems, released last night, Portugal gave “a strong performance” in 2018 but still has some issues to iron out. Among the matters that need addressing are waiting times and hospital infections.

I was admitted to the IPO hospital in Lisbon which is supposedly one of the best! I waited 5 and a half months for a serious operation for a threatening illness. The IPO completely forgot about my case and operation. I ended up going to Alvor hospital in a case of desperation to remove said illness ending up in financially destroying me. I know you can never put a price on health but it shore would of been nice to be stable during my 6 week recovery.

Yes, certain things in the Portuguese health system need to be addressed, but I experienced the health system in 2017 when my husband became terminally ill and was admitted to Faro hospital. His care for the last 5 weeks of his life was impeccable. I couldn’t fault anything, from cleanliness to my support. Well done Faro.

This conflicts with info released by the World Health Organisation which reports that Portugal has the 12th best healthcare system in the world. The WHO is the leading authority on such rankings and matters.

Please do not complain, portuguese health's tem compared to the UK is a lot better yes the waiting lists are long but as far as I see here they are as long here, obyously if you are lucky that your doctor refer you to a specialist. Private sector useless unless theGp refers you to specialist or exames. If I can I will do everything concerning to health in Portugal absolutely!
