Born in 2013 at the National Iberian Lynx reproduction centre in Silves, Kentaro was released in December 2014 in Montes de Toledo as part of the Life Iberian Lynx recovery programme.
His movements since were followed to the north of the Iberian Peninsula, where he crossed into the Cantabrian mountain range then back into Portugal via the Montesinho mountains.
The last emission from his GPS collar indicated he was in Ourense, some 367 kilometres in a straight line from where he was first released, having travelled 2,410 kilometres.
Kentaro’s whereabouts have been unknown since March this year and he was found dead in Maia on 15 October, having been hit by a car.
According to the national institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), being run over is one of the main causes of death among reintroduced Iberian lynxes.

Unfortunately motorists kill thousands of animals, birds and even kill humans. Because some motorists treat the roads as their personal race track. And yet there is no outcry about it. Unlike the outcry against wind-turbines, which do not kill thousands of birds as wind-power critics claim.

Poor little guy... He loved to travel and couldn't stay away from
Portugal...
I share the deep sorrow of the breeders. Please do another one.
Kentaro was a big success.
