Snow continued to fall for much of the week, with authorities deciding to close the roads between Piornos via Torre to Lagoa Comprida and from the latter lake via the road Loriga to Sabugueiro remained closed.
Snow-clearing machines were “on the ground”, with officials saying decisions to re-open roads would depend on the prevailing weather conditions and forecasts.
Elsewhere, in Montalegre and in Melgaço, further north, children were able to return to school on Wednesday after roads were cleared of the snow that had on Tuesday prevented them from doing so.
Portugal’s meteorological institute had earlier forecast “weak and infrequent showers, in the form of snow above 800 metres, turning into periods of rain from mid-morning.”
Along the coast, six river port entries remained closed to all navigation and another four are only accessible to larger vessels due to the strong sea swell, with waves of four or five metres according to Portugal’s navy.
