“Every year a number of people die on Portuguese roads, equivalent to three crashed planes,” said Rui Ribeiro, president of the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR).
"We continue to live with this pandemic [of road accidents] with some peace of mind and, effectively, it is up to each one of us, it is up to all of us, to protect our lives, the people we love and who travel with us in the car”, he warned.
Rui Ribeiro stressed to journalists that attention is needed, despite the fact that road accidents are “consistently decreasing in terms of fatalities in recent years”.
Due to the covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions it implied, “2020 was an atypical year”, but this year, which is already “a typical year”, shows that the numbers in Portugal are “at the same level as last year ”, he indicated.
