In a statement, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) states that the effects of the Ernest depression in mainland Portugal will be felt by the increase in the intensity of the wind starting 7 December afternoon, extending until Tuesday, 8 December.
Wind gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour are forecast on the coast north of Cabo Mondego and up to 100 kilometres per hour in the highlands.
Because of the wind, the IPMA placed the districts of Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Coimbra and Braga under yellow warning until 06:00 on Tuesday.
The Ernest depression will also bring to the continent, an increase in sea agitation, on the west coast, with northwest waves of 4 to 5 meters above the north of Cabo Raso.
Due to this situation, the IPMA placed the districts of Viana do Castelo, Porto, Aveiro, Lisbon, Leiria, Coimbra and Braga under yellow warning until 3:00 pm on Tuesday.
According to the IPMA, it is also foreseen the occurrence of periods of rain, more frequent in the North and Center, which will be in the form of snow in the levels above 1,400 / 1,600 meters and gradually decreasing to 1,000 / 1,200 meters.
