“The Regional Government of Madeira understands that security conditions in terms of public health are not met for the event to take place”, reads information released by the office of the secretary of Tourism and Culture of the archipelago.
Therefore, the executive has “decided to cancel the parties that would take place between February 26 and March”.
The 19 troupes that would usually parade in the carnival procession, the main event of the celebrations, which is normally attended by thousands of residents and visitors, are already being informed of this decision.
"Contrary to what happened at the Flower Festival", whose programming, in 2020 and 2021, could be "moved to other times of the year without prejudice to its purpose, Carnival Festivals cannot be postponed".
Due to the current pandemic situation, the regional executive considers that cancelling the planned Carnival events is “the right decision”.
