An earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale was recorded at 9:15am today with the epicentre at sea about 45 kilometres south-southwest of Faro, announced the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

In a statement, the IPMA said that the earthquake detected by the mainland's seismic network stations did not cause personal or material damage, according to the information available so far.
The earthquake "was felt with maximum intensity II/III on the modified Mercalli scale in the Faro region", added the institute.
