The earthquake was recorded at 1:55 am, at the continent's seismic network stations, said the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), in a statement.

"According to the information available to date, [the earthquake] did not cause personal or material damage and was felt with maximum intensity III/IV (modified Mercalli scale) in the municipalities of Alcobaça and Porto de Mós", in the district of Leiria.

With intensity IV, considered moderate, "suspended objects sway, the vibration is similar to that caused by the passing of heavy vehicles or the sensation of a heavy ball hitting the walls, parked cars sway, windows, doors, and dishes shake, glass and crockery clashes or clanks and in the upper part of this level the walls and wooden structures creak", describes IPMA on the online page.
