The conclusions are from a study by the directorates-general of Health and Education, which assessed the implementation, in 405 groups of public schools, of the rules for the sale of foodstuffs that came into force in 2021.
According to the report, more than 90% of school bars stopped providing pastries, soft drinks, cookies and biscuits.
Among the “forbidden” foods, the most difficult to find today are fast food meals, sweet desserts, sweet and savoury snacks, sweets or sandwiches with sauces, which are available in less than 1% of schools.
On the other hand, the most frequent foods found are cereal bars and ice cream, but even so, most schools are compliant.
Those that are not - the report adds - “seek to provide food options that have a better nutritional profile”.
As for the products that became mandatory, the main difficulty for schools seems to have been in introducing salads and soups, available in less than a third of the bars.
Among the rest, the overwhelming majority has plain milk and bread according to the standards, but there are still some bars that do not offer fresh fruit (14.4%), yogurt (13.4%) and free drinking water (10.9%).
