The operation should take place by the end of the third quarter, according to a report by Jornal Económico.
In the authorities' sights will be the most recent Local Accommodation units, those that have delivered a VAT return in arrears and those that have very low billing values and are, as a rule, on VAT credit. Inspectors will be on the lookout for potential tax evasion in the sector, given the dozens of complaints that have reached the Tax Authorities and the Public Prosecutor's Office with evidence of non-invoicing and improper invoicing.
A source from the tax administration adds that the objective is to prevent the development of an informal economy and to raise awareness among economic operators.
In 2017, an inspection operation was carried out on 3,750 Local Accommodation establishments.
Check out how many properties are being listed under different host names but are in fact owned by the same landlord.
Checkout the number of bedrooms being listed versus the actual habitation licence and you will be shocked how many people have secretly added more rooms. Not only a tax dodge but a safety risk.
Check out the water usage for each property, although some will have bore holes Do the same with electricity consumption but many of these properties will have solar.
Check out foreign plated cars a large amount of which are permanent residents.
There is a housing crisis due to the distortions the holiday rental market brings but then realising many of there landlords are also dodging taxes is an insult to the rest of the population that struggle to survive on a daily basis.

Thank you James for your insights: minor corruption in the guise of "everyone does it" is the bedrock of major corruption and decreased standard of lifestyle and security. For all to enjoy a good life, all must be good citizens.

@James I heard there's a job opening at the Stasi office in Berlin-Lichtenberg!

Portugal should introduce a whistleblower reward scheme like they have in the USA.
Anyone that reports tax dodgers get 25% of the money clawed back by the tax office.
I am sick and tired of smug tax dodgers that take take take and in doing so have caused misery for the majority of the Portuguese population that can't afford a home.
Airbnb and other rental companies should make sure the bedrooms offered match the habitation license.
Many of us are fed up with properties being over filled with tourists that have no regard for the neighbourhoods they are staying in, by tax dodging landlords.
Time is up!

I agree all should pay their due taxes, but as in any society there will be a minority that will try to evade paying. The main thing is that Portugal should remain the way it is, that is why so many tourist come here and many come to live here, it’s because they like the way of life, the people and the simplicity of life. We certainly do not want to use the USA as an example James, have you seen the state of it lately?, would you live there?.
Be happy and enjoy Portugal for what it is.
