According to a report published by the Portuguese Football League (LPFP), the last season was the 14th one with a positive balance, a trend that has been going on since 2009/10 and that has been continuous until now.

The main Portuguese division, over the last six seasons has an accumulated value of 1,310 millilon euros and ‘no other league can surpass the billion euro barrier’, states the LPFP accounts.

The study also notes that around 30% of the 10 biggest sales in the championship come from players in training.

The balance for the current season is 99 million, reflecting the expenses of 190 million compared to the 289 million in revenue. The entry average reaches 682 million, the highest value ever, in 2022/23.

That year, the costs amounted to 242 million, also the highest quantity ever invested in the purchase of players.

The League’s editorial puts Portugal at the top of the main championships in terms of positive results and during the 2022/23 season, there was the most outstanding value of them all.

The LPFP highlights that the sale of the Benfica players, João Félix, Enzo Fernandes and Darwin Nunes, Sporting player, Bruno Fernandes and FC Porto player, Otávio were all at the highest value ever achieved.

The sale of Gonçalo Ramos, by Benfica to Paris-Germain, is an example of the additional value of a young player in training. Sporting is in the lead of transfer value revenue with 123.5 million after the first window of 2023/24, compared to the 67.5 million of FC Porto and the 19.6 million of Benfica, without taking into account the usual contractual clauses that are not paid immediately.

The report also calls attention to Gil Vicente, who invested in the Spaniard Fran Navarro and managed to sell him to FC Porto for the highest amount raised ever (7 million euros) and also Arouca, who contracted the Brazilian Anthony at practically zero cost and transferred him for 3.2 million euros to Portland Chambers.
