The seaweed has caused numerous losses in this sector, given the amount of algae that has appeared on the beaches of the south of Portugal and Spain.

A delegation composed of President Luís Encarnação, Vice-President Anabela Simão, Councillor Mário Guerreiro and technicians from the Lagoense municipality, travelled to the city of Tarifa, in Spain, on November 20, to learn about the work carried out by the technicians from the Spanish municipality, as it has been facing this problem of invasive algae since 2018.

The visit was focused on the studies and data collected so far by the Municipality of Tarifa, the measures taken to mitigate the impact of the invasive species and where it goes, after collecting it on the beaches. This visit also served as a way for the Municipality of Lagoa, which has been facing this problem for two years, to share its experience and difficulties in dealing with this phenomenon.

This was the first step in this partnership, which aims to carry out a more detailed study of this invasive species, so that it can be shared with the various entities seeking a solution to this problem, such as the Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA), the Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Algarve (CCDR), a Universidade do Algarve and all the municipalities in the Algarve region.
