According to a study by idealista, only 1.6% of apartments for rent have an area of less than 30 square meters (m2), a percentage similar to that observed at the beginning of 2023.
The idealista study - which is based on advertisements for apartments for rent published on the portal in the last 3 months - shows that the supply of tiny houses is a minority in the rental market (dwellings under 30 m2), a trend which has been occurring since at least the beginning of last year. However, if we consider houses for rent between 30 m2 and 60 m2 we see that the supply increases, representing 19.1% of the total stock in this period.
The most significant share of apartments available for rent in Portugal (39.2%) cover an area between 60 m2 and 100 m2. Next are apartments with areas between 100 m2 and 150 m2, which represent 26.9% of the total supply, and, finally, 13.2% of apartments are larger than 150 m2. This means that in Portugal around eight out of every ten apartments for rent are over 60 m2.
This is great news. Larger homes are more expensive to furnish and heat. Cleaning is more time consuming as well.
