The protest was called by the academic associations of Coimbra, Azores, Algarve, Aveiro, Beira Interior, Évora, Madeira, Trás-os-Montes, and Alto Douro and by the Academic Federation of Lisbon.

“The difficulties experienced by Portuguese households in supporting the excessive inflation in the real estate market when deciding to invest in their students’ careers are becoming increasingly clear,” the student representatives write in a statement.

The associations also mention that the National Plan for Accommodation in Higher Education could help overcome this barrier, but its implementation is taking too long.

With the motto “Roof and housing, a right to education”, the meeting is scheduled for 2:30 pm in Rossio, with the students then making their way to the Assembly of the Republic.

The demonstration takes place three days before National Student Day, which is celebrated on March 24.
