The Câmara de Óbidos, in Leiria’s district, will move forward with an initiative to use technology to find elderly persons who require assistance in specific real danger situations. In its first phase, the project, which aims to strengthen proximity support to the senior population, will monitor 150 people in real-time. Moreover, the project will also supervise 500 young people to understand their lifestyle regarding physical activity.

“Often, in a territory with inverted demographics like the one that characterizes our municipality, there is some isolation of the population”, explained Filipe Daniel, the mayor of Óbidos at the opening of the ‘Festival Óbidos + Active’. The municipality will proceed with the project’s initial phase, which consists of monitoring 150 elderly in real-time with the aim of strengthening proximity support to the older population through technology in collaboration with a telehealth technology business. According to the mayor, "they will also be georeferenced, so that quick and timely assistance is possible, if necessary."

To improve the health and well-being of the entire community, Filipe Daniel emphasised that "the idea is to have indicators that allow us to understand if we are on the right path, or if there is something more we can do”. The municipality intends to proceed with a pilot project for the entire municipality's population after these elderly and youth groups are studied.

Through digitally tracking physical activity, raising awareness of the advantages of exercise, supporting self-care adherence, lowering social isolation, and fostering interaction and social connections among participants, the programme seeks to enhance the quality of life for its participants.
