The tourist tax, which will be approved at a meeting of the Funchal executive, to be implemented by the municipality from October 1st, will allow visitors to “pay a symbolic amount per night, of two euros per night”, with the revenue “to be applied in urban cleaning, which increasingly has to be reinforced in human and technical means”, stated the president of the municipality, Cristina Pedra.

“Funchal has a lot of visitors who live in the autonomous region, but also tourists", said Cristina Pedra.

“This great avalanche of tourism, which is very important for the economy and for society itself, must also be associated with a huge reinforcement of the municipality’s resources and, specifically, urban cleaning”, highlighted the mayor.

Therefore, since 2021, the municipality has invested around seven million euros in equipment (fleet) and in hiring employees (gardeners/drivers, among others), said the councillor responsible for the Environment, Nádia Coelho.
