The “Zero Driving” campaign, which will run from 20 to 26 August, will be the eighth of the year under the ANSR’s 2024 National Enforcement Plan (PNF), which foresees 12, one for each month until the end of the year.

“In 2022, two out of every five drivers killed in road accidents had a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 0.5 g/l and three out of every four of these drivers had a level equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l”, ANSR recalls in a statement.

In collaboration with the GNR and PSP, the campaign will include road inspection actions, which will take place on Avenida Cidade Salamanca, in Viseu, on the 20th, at 9:00 pm; at the old Ermesinde A4 toll booths, in Porto, on the 21st, at 9:30 pm; at Largo de São Mamede, in Lisbon, on the 22nd, at 9:00 pm; on Estrada Nacional 118, Km 54.5 Marinhais Salvaterra de Magos, on the 23rd, at 8:00 pm; and on the IC-20 – Costa da Caparica/Almada direction, next to the Avenida Henrique Barbeitos roundabout, in Almada, on the 26th, at 8:00 pm.

The GNR and PSP inspection operations will have “a special focus on roads and access points with high traffic flow and in accordance with the 2024 National Traffic Safety Plan, in order to help reduce the risk of accidents and encourage drivers to adopt safer behaviours when it comes to driving under the influence of alcohol”.

In addition to inspection actions, the campaign will include awareness-raising actions, which will take place throughout the country, including the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores.

The ANSR recalls that “with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 g/l, the risk of suffering a serious or fatal accident doubles” and that accidents caused by the influence of alcohol are “particularly serious”.
