Following the discovery of a necropolis, coins, and other mediaeval treasures in the pentagonal Templar tower of Dornes, the municipality of Ferreira do Zêzere stated that it will establish a museum and visitor centre within the structure. The pentagonal tower has been undergoing renovations since 2023; however, the results of archaeological examinations have caused a delay in the project's anticipated completion date.
Bruno Gomes, the mayor of Ferreira do Zêzere, in the Santarém district, told Lusa that, "We will provide visitors with a wide range of experiences, namely the tower will be open to visitors at its top, with a 360º view over the Dornes peninsula, along with an immersive experience, with 'video mapping' on what is the Templars Route and which will tell some of the stories and legends of Dornes”.
The pentagonal tower, a "rare example of military architecture built by the Templars" to defend the Tejo River, has been undergoing renovations since 2023. However, the findings of archaeological surveys have delayed the project's expected completion date and even resulted in its reformulation after some coins and a mediaeval necropolis were discovered outside the tower.
According to Bruno Gomes the most relevant factor has been the exact findings that have turned up near the tower during archaeological surveys, like a necropolis, which they want to preserve, along with artefacts, coins, and threads, among other materials, “and we want to take advantage of the tower to preserve them in a museum space”. A floor (slate paving) was discovered at a depth of one metre, which has since been excavated to assess chronologies and evaluate the existence of other preserved archaeological contexts. These discoveries, along with the coins found outside the tower, "allowed us to date the chronology of those burials more accurately" and advance our knowledge of this monument's history, the mayor shared.
The Dornes tower once stood high above the valley of the river Zêzere (not the Tejo) which was flooded by the construction of the dam which holds the waters of the Albufeira do Castelo de Bode. It is approached by a way marked with the seven stations of the Cross.
