The report was made by the secretary-general of the National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof), at a press conference to mark the start of the school year, two weeks before the start of classes, and in which Mário Nogueira anticipated a school year "that will continue to be marked by the serious problem of the lack of teachers".

According to the calculations made by Fenprof, there are at least 890 timetables to be filled, which correspond to 19,598 hours of classes, 4,900 classes, and around 122 thousand students "who, if there were classes today, would not have at least one teacher".

These timetables correspond only to those available in the school recruitment offer, the last phase for teacher recruitment, in addition to the positions that are still to be filled through the recruitment reserves.

As in previous years, it is in schools in the district of Lisbon that there is a shortage of teachers, with 434 of the 890 timetables in the school recruitment offer, followed by Setúbal, with 205 timetables to be filled, and Faro with 112 timetables.

By subject, the greatest shortages are Computer Science (216 timetables), Geography (92 timetables), and Portuguese for secondary education (85 timetables).

"This is a problem that has been starting to become noticeable in the Centre and North, but it is more prevalent in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, Algarve, and Alentejo", Mário Nogueira stressed.
