John Wilson, Managing Director & Senior Architect, started Bespoke as a one-man endeavour, and it gradually expanded to become a well-known Algarve architecture firm with a reputation for creating architectural solutions that fit the needs and lifestyle of their clients. “We work on every kind of housing project”, shared the architect, who has been living and working in Portugal for 25 years. The Bespoke philosophy is based on collaborating with the client as an integral member of the project. “Some clients give us an outline and a few pictures, and we handle the rest”, John Wilson explained, noting that, “Other clients prefer to give us the freedom to develop the projects from scratch, but either way we make sure that they are always involved”. Many of Bespoke's customers return to collaborate with them on further projects.

Made to Measure

"Bespoke" means "made to measure," and as such, one of the company’s primary goals is to maximise customer satisfaction with the desired detailed product. Bespoke’s communication skills are exceptional, making them stand out from other similar companies. "We communicate very well with our clients and our project quality is very high”, shared the senior architect. Stated differently, Bespoke caters to the client's desires by doing their best to build a house in the specific style the client is looking for. “Bespoke always focuses on developing the best product within each style that the consumer may request, taking into account both their budget and all applicable laws”, John stated, “We are here to develop unique projects, and ultimately, the client's will is what counts and acts as a guide”.

Reference Projects

“Architecture is always evolving”, John emphasised, and at Bespoke there are several reference projects that are being carried out at the moment. According to John Wilson the Sky Base One project, a property with a distinct concept inspired by the science fiction universe which served as both the topic and inspiration for its construction, is a great example of one of those reference projects. “The Sky Base One project is very special, in terms of materials, design, details, and the impact that it causes on people”, the architect noted. Sky Base One has also been invited to different competitions, due to its uniqueness and original building features.

New Technologies

Bespoke has endeavoured to incorporate novel technologies into their designs, when required, in order to develop the best for its clients. “We are constantly adjusting to new construction technology. The traditional way of designing is no longer the same, and the 3D has been a major improvement in the architectural world”. The Sky Base One project mentioned above is an excellent illustration of how useful 3D technology can be to create a realistic picture of a future project, especially if these ones are not standard constructions. “Without the 3D design, which allows real-time visualisation of the entire system as opposed to a 2D system, I think Sky Base One would not have been possible”. According to the architecture, 3D is a major tool which helps to showcase what the final result will be. “A stationary image does not provide the same level of perception since your brain is unable to detect the true nature of the idea, that’s why 3D is so important”, John claimed.

Internationalisation

While the majority of projects involve starting from scratch, others consist of upgrading homes, which may involve making small adjustments or significant ones to already existing properties. “Because there aren't many empty lots in the Algarve's coastal region, complete remodels are typical as homeowners try to construct from scratch in the places where a prior dwelling once stood”, the architect stated. Moreover, Bespoke also does a lot of construction management. “We have an approved project and then we build the house, which means that we are the ones managing the construction of the house”.

Bespoke wants to expand internationally while also continue enhancing the local area through the ongoing development of outstanding projects. “The most difficult task of growing overseas will be locating an architecture company to collaborate on the project, as we need to partner with a local business that understands the area”. Collaborating with a wealthier nation where Bespoke’s product is more affordable is the standard course of action to start this expansion. However, in the meantime, Bespoke will continue to impress us with their original tailored designs developed in the Algarve.
