In August, the unemployment rate in Portugal stood at 6.4%, which means it fell by 0.1 percentage points (p.p.) compared to the previous two months (July and June), having remained stable compared to the same period of the previous year.
“The unemployment rate stood at 6.4%, a value lower than that of the previous month (0.1 p.p.), but the same as that of three months before and one year before”, reads the INE bulletin. It should be noted that, in recent months, the lowest unemployment rate occurred in April (6.3%).
The unemployed population (347.7 thousand) decreased compared to the previous month (0.4%), but increased compared to three months earlier (0.3% in May) and one year earlier (1.8% in August 2023).

The inactive population (2,515.2 thousand) decreased by 0.2% compared to the previous month and increased compared to three months earlier (1.0%) and one year earlier (0.6%), with the labour underutilisation rate being 10.9%, a value lower than that of July 2024 (0.1 percentage points), the same as that of May and lower than that of August 2023 (0.7 percentage points).
Regarding the employed population, the INE points to 5,067.8 thousand in August, having registered an increase compared to the previous month (0.2%) and the same period of the previous year (0.9%) and a decrease compared to three months earlier (0.1%).
