Oeiras was the municipality where the value of income in 2022 was highest in Portugal, presenting a median value of declared gross income deducted from the IRS, of 15,190 euros.

According to the Local Income Statistics, an annual document that focuses on gross income declared to the tax authorities, deducted from the IRS paid to the State by a taxpayer, this value, in 2022, stood at 10,679 euros in Portugal, and 70 municipalities, one more than in 2021, presented values ​​higher than the national reference point.

According to INE, the municipalities with median values ​​above 12,500 euros, in addition to Oeiras, were Lisbon (13,809 euros), Alcochete (12,874), Cascais (12,843), and Coimbra, with 12,557 euros.

The document also highlights that in the lowest values ​​at the national level, lower than 9,500 euros, “a group of municipalities was highlighted, mainly in the North region”, although, in the case of the Porto Metropolitan Area, three municipalities – Porto (11,975 euros ), Maia (11,914) and Matosinhos (11,514 euros) – have high median income values.

The data compiled by INE based on information shared by the Tax and Customs Authority, also reveal, by sub-regions, that Greater Lisbon (12,336 euros), the Setúbal Peninsula (11,741) and the Coimbra Region (10,881 euros) were those with the highest median values ​​of net income per person.

With values ​​higher than the national reference of 10,679 euros, the list also includes the Leiria Region (10,859 euros), Central Alentejo (10,804), the Aveiro Region (10,789) and the autonomous regions of the Azores (10,776) and Madeira ( 10,763 euros).

At the opposite extreme, the sub-regions of Alto Tâmega e Barroso (8,859 euros) and Tâmega e Sousa (9,195 euros) had the lowest median incomes, below 9,500 euros per person.

INE also noted that the median value of net income per person “increased by 5.4% compared to the previous year”.

“All municipalities, with the exception of Odemira, increased the median value of net income per person and in 228 of the municipalities that increase was higher than that of the country”.
