ANSR compares the numbers with the same period in 2014, highlighting “the growing trend” in the last decade, in which accidents increased by 22%, fatalities by 3.4%, serious injuries by 26% and minor injuries by 18.9%.
Compared to the first six months of last year, the ANSR indicates that, between January and June, there were 19 fewer fatalities (-8.2%), however there were 571 more accidents (+3.4%), 56 more serious injuries (+5.0%) and 692 more minor injuries (+3.6%).
The ANSR also makes a comparison with 2019, the reference year for monitoring the targets for reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries by 2030 set by the European Commission and Portugal, with a decrease in deaths and minor injuries, with minus 12 and 119 respectively. On the other hand, an increase in serious injuries and accidents was observed, with 136 more serious injuries (13.0%) and 486 more disasters (2.9%).
As an 11 month resident of the Algarve and a frequent driver mostly on the A22, I have to say these statistics aren't surprising. The speeds drivers use on the A22 are shocking. I drive less than the speed limit to produce the best battery results for our EV, and at 110 km I am passed by those who make me feel I'm sitting still in the middle of the road. They must be doing at least 140. And cutting in almost removing my front bumper is a common occurance. I'm left wondering how such a kind and polite society gets such horrific road manners?

When is the government going to impose an age limit on users of electric scooters! Increasingly, children are riding these idiotic and dangerous contraptions on public roads. On Saturday I narrowly avoided a head-on collision with a child who took the wrong way on a roundabout.
