At an event at Cidade do Futebol, in Oeiras, the entity's president, Fernando Gomes, announced a “long-term” partnership with the company, which thus replaces Nike, which had been responsible for the teams kit since 1997.
“We started working on this a year and three months ago. We were pleasantly surprised by Puma, we were thrilled and, after a long courtship, we understood that it would be a good marriage. Over the years, we have grown in national teams, from youth teams to women's teams”, stated Fernando Gomes.
The head of the FPF, who will end his term at the beginning of next year, did not discuss the length of the contract but explained that it will be at least until 2030 when Portugal will organise the World Cup together with Spain and Morocco.
“It is the signing of a long-term contract for stability and protection of the investment. All the contracts we have signed in different areas run until or beyond 2030, and this one will not fail to respect this duration”, he explained.
After teams such as Switzerland, Austria, Serbia, Czech Republic, Senegal, Egypt and Morocco, the Portuguese team will be the 12th to have equipment from the German company.
The first appearance of the main national team with the new kit will be in March next year, in the game against Denmark, in Copenhagen, in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the League of Nations.
