The wonderful life story, “The Cardboard Suitcase: Adventure, Travel, Romance - A Poor Boy's Dreams Explode Into Reality!” by local author Peter Giacomini is now available in multiple different languages, which includes Portuguese, Spanish and Italian, alongside the original version in English.
The intriguing title references Peter leaving home at 15 years old with a cardboard suitcase and travelling to Rome with the equivalent of 50 dollars, where he got his first job in the hotel industry.
Peter’s intentions were always set “to be a waiter and to make people happy and give them an experience which was instilled from (his) mother.”
Peter shared a synopsis of “The Cardboard Suitcase”: “It is a story of my life from my birth to my retirement in Praia da Luz in the Algarve. It tells the story of a poor boy born in the middle of WW2 in destroyed Italy, who was blessed to make a career in the world of luxury hotels in five continents and in excess of a dozen countries. It describes the ups and downs of life from poverty to success, from working in a tap factory at the age of nine to vice president and general manager of world-renowned hotel companies like Marriott and Disney.”
“Adventure, travel, romance - you'll find them all in abundance within the pages of Peter Giacomini's remarkable book ... plus a liberal sprinkling of sex and intrigue too! His close up and personal view of the world of grand hotels and restaurants allows him to deliver a tale of tragedy and triumph to rival and surpass any mere piece of fiction. This is real, actual, in the raw and a read so compelling that the pages just whizz by. Peter's book provides a breathe-taking roller coaster of hope, despair, love and salvation, from the devastation of war torn Italy to the peaks of the Alps, the Andes and the grandest hotels in the world. It is a real life rags to riches story, joyous and inspirational. A read not to miss.”
One particularly striking review reads, “Filled with so many nostalgic, wonderful stories, and I enjoyed every single page of the book. Congratulations on such wonderful achievements and such a wonderful career that you had with MARRIOTT. It brought back many fond memories to me, and I’m sure that your lovely wife Janet is very proud of you. Thank you again for the joy of your words and for just doing a great job. Just too many wonderful episodes for me to come in from beginning to end this is a reading joy!”.
