Jenny Clarke, President of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve, shrugs. "All I know is that we are determined to make 2025 even better.”
Their successful ‘Pop-Up Shops, events; Lunches, dinners, and special private parties. “Money raised goes towards SniP.” All of it? “Well let’s put it this way most! One way or another we managed to Spay or Neuter around 200 feral cats. Care for assorted abandoned dogs and help to do some re-homing. We’ve also donated monies to other charities, in need, for repair, rebuilding work.” Although times have been difficult, APAA has managed to keep its head above water.
“The government almost scuttled us all, taking us by surprise, cancelling the annual Animal Welfare budget for 2025. But relief all round when they rescinded and reinstalled the budget.” Worrying times. “All charities, rely on the goodness of people. The person willing to give a bit of time and money.” APAA’s Alvor and Silves shops raised a good amount of money along with the ‘Pop-Up Shops’. “We share the stock between us. Rotating stuff and selling as much as we can.” The APAA Team has a lot of people to thank for their hard work. “Commitment. It’s not easy. But there are pay-backs, a group you can socialise with, work alongside and raise money for the animals in need. “Zélia Santos has been inundated with feral cat-colony enquiries. Some good people want information on how to catch trap feral cats in the neighbourhood.
Can be hard work but rewarding!” Jenny’s white van has been whizzing to-and-fro all year. “Collecting stuff for cats mainly. Cat colonies are expensive to run. Feeding, cleaning, vet care. SniP!” Got it. “Then, the public, people who try and help by adopting a furry-friendly friend off the street. Not always easy but well worthwhile.” Whilst Anita is busy looking ahead for the ‘Pop-Up’ schedule, sadly lost one of her seven dogs. “I couldn’t believe it, a few days later, another abandoned doggie turned up by the lixo bins.” Back to seven. “Thanking everyone is difficult. They all know who they are. They turn up and quietly get on with the task at hand. Ask for nothing in return.”
Preserves? Jams? Cookies? “Definitely no freebies. Well, not that we can admit to. The odd gift here and there.” Sadly Judy one of their friends and helpers has returned to England. “She’ll be missed. Always a smile and a helping hand.” Jackie their treasurer has had a busy year with lunch events. “Some are private parties for members. But if anyone is interested in being added to the lunch list, let us know!” Happy 2025!
