In a statement, the PSP indicates that it detained 118 suspects until November 30th.
“The main threat arises from itinerant criminal groups that travel from region to region and from country to country, with the aim of perpetrating this type of crime, targeting houses and apartments”.
According to the security force, theft through break-in, climbing or false keys corresponds to 48.2% of occurrences of this type of crime.
“Criminal groups that carry out this type of crime, although they do not change much in the methods of introduction into homes, in addition to studying the daily routines of residents, they always exploit, over time, the vulnerabilities that exist in the security of properties”, according to the PSP.
Given the proximity to the Christmas period and the turn of the year, the PSP advises the population to close and lock the door to their homes, and make sure the access door to the building is properly closed, as well as the doors or gates accessing the garages.
It is also recommended to keep some clothes out or use some type of nightlight to make it appear that someone may be living inside the residence.
Do not disclose your daily routines on social media, as well as periods when you are away from home, do not keep large amounts of money at home, keep jewellery in safes and write down information about suspicious people or vehicles on the street are other PSP advice.
That's reassuring. I'd have thought there would be far more than say 7000 burglaries per year in Portugal. With a population of 10.0 million on the mainland, and 2.2 people per household, there are 4.5 million homes. That means on average your house will be burgled once every 650 years. In northern Europe where burglary is more common, it's typically once in a lifetime, so several times more likely than in Portugal.
Good tips to make your home look occupied. Have lights come on in different rooms using a timer, but not the main hallway. Close shutters if you're going to be away overnight. Have a neighbour remove mail that's visible in a mailbox. Install an alarm, it gives peace of mind and you can find people to do it for less than €1,000. Remember most burglaries occur in daylight hours. You want to make it as hard as possible so that thieves will choose another house, not yours.
