“This project greatly increases the parking supply in the most central area of the city”, said the Councillor for Urban Planning at Vila Real City Council, Adriano Sousa, who was speaking to journalists during a visit to the project.

The car park will complement the existing underground car park in the town square and, he added, it will be an important support for the municipal market and “fill in some spaces that were removed from the public space” as part of the works of the Strategic Urban Development Plan (PEDU).

Mayor Rui Santos also highlighted the proximity to the seminary, where a hotel will be built, highlighting the reuse of a large, central, historic building that will allow for an increase in the number of tourist beds in the municipality.

The car park, called “silo auto”, will be paid for, will have five floors and 325 parking spaces and will cost 3.5 million euros to be borne by the company that holds the concession for paid parking for a period of 25 years.

Diogo Rodrigues, director of the concessionaire company ESSE – Surface and Underground Parking, stated that the new space should be completed by the end of August, or the beginning of September.

The current concession includes around 800 surface parking spaces, underground parking and the construction of the new structure.
