Based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) relating to the general weather situation (wind and sea) for the coast, the captaincy indicates that on the north coast of Madeira, the waves will be from the northwest between four and five meters, and two to three meters in the southern part.
As for the wind, it should be from the west/southwest, varying between moderate and “sometimes fresh”, which could reach around 40 kilometres per hour, while visibility at sea will be “good to moderate”.
“The entire maritime community and the general population are advised to take precautions when preparing to go to sea, as well as when at sea or in coastal areas,” insists the captaincy.
The regional maritime authority recommends reinforcement of mooring and surveillance of moored and anchored vessels, avoidance of walks near the sea or in areas exposed to rough seas, and refraining from recreational fishing, especially near cliffs and cliff areas frequently hit by breaking waves, are some of the indications left in the notice.
